Drug Development

The Drug Development Committee works in collaboration with the ITCC (Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer) Consortium to develop new drugs to treat neuroblastoma.

A list of current ITCC studies for patients with solid tumours is available here.

Its objectives are:

  • to inform SIOPEN members of all available early phase clinical trials led by ITCC that are relevant for neuroblastoma to ensure maximal recruitment
  • to explore early clinical trials proposals with a wider neuroblastoma community to ensure a seamless integration of early clinical studies to frontline studies
  • to promote the incorporation of novel translational findings into neuroblastoma clincial practice (new drugs, new targets and development of biomarkers)

The group is formed by more than 30 members from most SIOPEN countries. Andy Pearson from Royal Marsden Hospital/Institute of Cancer Research (Sutton, UK) chairs the group and Lucas Moreno, from CNIO/Hospital del Niño Jesús (Madrid, Spain) is Vice-Chair. The group has strong links with ITCC thanks to the collaboration from Birgit Geoerger and with the Biology group thanks to Gudrun Schleiermacher.

Members of the group have been involved in the joint ITCC-ENCCA initiative “New Drug Development Strategy” for Neuroblastoma that met in London in December 2012, gathering clinicians and scientists with expertise in neuroblastoma from Europe with the aim of accelerating and improving the development of new drugs for this childhood cancer.

One of the successful examples of the collaborative work of SIOPEN and ITCC is the BEACON-Neuroblastoma clinical trial that has recently opened across Europe.
