In memory of Tom Monclair

Tom Monclair was born on the 26th of February 1942  and passed away on the 17th of November 2023.

Tom received his medical degree at the University of Oslo in 1968.

Already as a student, he was determined to become a paediatric surgeon and started his training at Oslo University Hospital Ullevaal in 1971.

In 1980 he took a PhD in renal physiology and became a specialist in general surgery in 1981 and paediatric surgery in 1982.

From 1986 he worked as a consultant in paediatric surgery at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet.

Tom subspecialized in the surgical treatment of serious innate malformations and solid paediatric tumours

He was ambitious and highly concerned about the quality of treatment, including not only the surgical procedure, but also the diagnostic work-up and, if relevant, even the choice of chemotherapy.

He introduced new treatment options and was eager to secure an international standard in the surgical care of newborns and children in Norway.

Through his long career, he became a pioneer and a national resource for paediatric cancer surgery, especially neuroblastoma.

Tom Monclair was a supportive member and pilar for SIOPEN over so many years. Tom was very appreciated by his colleagues who appreciated and valued very much his clinical experience and opinion.

SIOPEN was honored and blessed to have known Tom, our sincerest condolences to his loved ones.
